2018
The Water and Sanitation for Health Facility Improvement Tool (WASH FIT) is a facility-led risk-based approach which focuses on implementing incremental improvements over time to improve quality of care. When a climate-lens is applied to WASH FIT, risk assessments can identify triggers and provide warning signs to facility management teams to help them to develop mitigation measures for future climate-related events. The target audience are WASH and Health specialists and managers interested in planning for new, or upgrade existing WASH services in health care facilities.

Detailed description of Tool

WASH FIT comprises 5 steps:
1. Assemble the team,
2. Conduct an assessment of the facility,
3. Undertake hazard and risk assessment,
4. Develop an improvement plan and
5. Monitor progress and make improvements to the plan.

The tool was first piloted in 2015 and officially launched in 2018. Integration of climate resilience has been completed in 2020. Modifications to support inclusion of climate-change related risks and considerations have been introduced for each of the five WASH FIT steps in 2020. Specific guidance for WASH FIT considering climate resilience is available and intended to be used in conjunction with the original WHO UNICEF WASH FIT guide which includes a detailed explanation of each stage and accompanying tools.

Since it was launched the tool has been used in over 25 countries - primarily in small, primary care health facilities in low-resource settings.
